He previously played for Celtic, making three first team appearances, and also spent a short loan spell with Scottish Championship side Falkirk in 2014. Celtic
Chalmers joined Celtic at the age of 10 and went on to progress through the youth ranks at the academy. Chalmers, along with four youngsters, signed his first professional contract at the club in December 2011.

On 31 January 2014, Chalmers signed for Falkirk on loan until the end of the 2013-2014 season.
Chalmers made his Falkirk debut at left-back in a 2–0 defeat to Queen of the South at Palmerston Park on 8 February 2014. In his spell at Falkirk, he made a total of 11 appearances.
After his return, Chalmers was given another chance, under new manager, Ronny Deila. However, multiple injuries, such as persistent groin and hip injuries reduced Chalmers" playing time much further.
At the end of the 2014-2015 season, Chalmers was released by the club in hopes of getting first team football.
Motherwell
On 4 June 2015, Chalmers signed for Scottish Premiership club Motherwell on a two-year contract. Upon signing for the club, Chalmers said he would continued playing in top-flight football and his move to Motherwell would fallen through if Rangers beat Motherwell in the play-offs, having previously trained with the club International Chalmers represented Scotland U16, Scotland U17, Scotland U19, Scotland U20 and Scotland U21 levels.
