Hamm began as a forward in high school. He moved into the midfielder while playing for the Saint Louis University Billikens from 1969 to 1972. Hamm and his team mates won the 1969, 1970 and 1972 National Collegiate Athletic Association Men"s Soccer Championship.
He was inducted into the Saint Louis University Athletic Hall of Fame in 1995.
Career
