Hoppe graduated from Watertown High School in Watertown, then went on to Saint John"s University in Collegeville, earning a Bachelor of Arts in History.
He is also a local businessman and works in communications. Hoppe was first elected in 2002, and was re-elected in 2004, 2006, 2008, 2010, and 2012. He ran unopposed in 2010 and 2012.
He was the chair of the House Commerce Committee during the 2011–2012 session.
Hoppe is a renowned hunter and angler, and participated in the 2011 Governor"s Fishing Opener with Speaker Kurt Zellers and Governor Mark Dayton. He was also invited to the Governor"s Pheasant Hunting Opener in 2011.
A member of the Republican Party of Minnesota, he represents District 47B, which includes portions of Carver County in the southwestern part of the Twin Cities metropolitan area.
