McDonald graduated from Hennepin Technical College with an Associate of Arts in photography.

He is also a photographer and business owner. In 2003, he earned his Master"s degree in Photography and, in 2008, his Craftsman"s degree in Photography. He is also active in the local Lions Club, the American Legion, the Knights of Columbus, the chamber of commerce, the Junior Chamber of Commerce, and the Fourth of July committee.
McDonald was first elected to the House in 2010 and re-elected in 2012.
McDonald"s father, Kenneth "K.J." McDonald, also served as a Minnesota state representative from 1977–1991, representing the old legislative districts 35A and 35B.

A member of the Republican Party of Minnesota, he represents District 29A, which includes portions of Wright and Hennepin counties just northwest of the Twin Cities metropolitan area. Active in his community, he was a member of the Delano School Board, and also served on the city council from 2000–2006, and as mayor from 2007-2010.
