Actor comedian producer author columinist
Joey Adams was born on January 6, 1911 in Brooklyn, New York, United States. He was a son of Nathan Abramowitz, a tailor, and Ida (Chonin) Abramowitz.
Joey Adams attended City College (now the City College of the City University of New York) before dropping out in 1931 for a vaudeville job.
Joey Adams appeared in the stage production of Guys and Dolls and the Broadway version of Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus. A colleague of such comedians as Henny Youngman and Milton Berle, Adams was a popular guest on such television shows as those hosted by Ed Sullivan and Jackie Gleason. Adams served as a goodwill ambassador for five presidents, who frequently sent him off to foreign countries to spread cheer, but his tart comments also made him a favorite at the New York City Friars Club celebrity roasts. For many years, he wrote the Strictly for Laughs column in the New York Post. He made numerous television appearances over the years, including on The Ed Sullivan Show and Howard Stern's 1990s TV shows, and was in the films Singing in the Dark (1956, of which he was also executive producer), Don't Worry, We'll Think of a Title (1966), and Silent Prey (1997). For many years, he hosted a radio talk show on WEVD in New York.
Adams wrote numerous books, most of which had to do with telling jokes or humorous topics. Among his works are From Gags to Riches, It Takes One to Know One: The Joey Adams Do-It-Yourself Laugh Kit, and Joey Adams Joke Diary. In addition, Adams’ syndicated newspaper column Strictly for Laughs ran for more than twenty years.
Adams died on December 2, 1999, at St. Vincent's Hospital in Manhattan, aged 88, from heart failure. His widow had his remains cremated.
