The firm was established in 1902, and in 1998 it merged with Findlay & Tait, founded in 1885, and John & Kernick, founded in 1923, to form Bowman Gilfillan. The Gilfillan practice traces its roots to Douglas Gilfillan, who moved to Johannesburg in 1893 and founded a law firm later known as Bowman Gilfillan.
