By long experience many drillers learn to distinguish, generally quite correctly, the three principal classes of sediments in which most of their work is done, such as shale or clay, sandstone and limestone. The most experienced drillers in any locality have, also, expert knowledge of what we may call the key rocks of the field in which they work. They know the rocks that. determine the depth at which casing is to be set, or the depth at which the tests for oil or gas must be made. This knowledge of rocks is mostly taught from mouth to mouth, by the head driller to his helpers, entirely without any other guidance than the limited experience of each driller. No aid, so far as I know, has ever been prepared by geologists to help drillers in procuring the information both are eagerly seeking. With the extension of drilling operations to regions of widely different geological formations and conditions, it has become a matter of some urgency that drillers logs be made with greater accuracy and uniformity than before. The only way to encourage improvement in this direction is to place in the hands of the men who make the logs, what aid they need. By the use of a few very simple devices, available to all, great improvements in results can be attained without the least loss of time.. The present paper is an attempt to present some information, in compact form, that will aid practical and intelligent men to correctly identify materials explored in drilling for oil, gas, or water. It will be found that much of the information here set forth consists of elementary methods and facts drawn from mineralogy and geology. Most drillers are eager to acquire all knowledge they can in these sciences. (Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.) Johan August Udden was born on March 19, 1859 at Lekasa, Sweden, the son of Andrew Larsen Udden and Inga Lena (Andersdotter) Udden. Two years after his birth his parents emigrated to America and settled in Minnesota, where Udden spent his early youth.
Udden graduated with a Bachelor’s degree from Augustana College, Rock Island, Illinois, in 1881, studied at the University of Minnesota in 1886, and received the M. A. degree from Augustana in 1889.
At least four honorary degrees were conferred on Udden: D. Phil. at Augustana College in 1900, D. Sc. at Bethany College in 1921 and at Texas Christian University in 1923, and LL. D. at Augustana College in 1929.
From 1881 to 1888 he taught natural science, German, and civics at Bethany College, Lindsborg, Kansas, and from 1888 to 1911 was professor of geology and natural history at Augustana College. During this period he worked in the summer months for several geological survey organizations. He was special assistant to the Iowa Geological Survey from 1897 until 1903, geologist for the University of Texas mineral survey in 1903 and 1904, and geologist of the Illinois Geological Survey from 1906 until 1911. He was also special agent of the United States Geological Survey from 1908 until 1914. In 1911 Udden was appointed by the University of Texas as geologist in the Bureau of Economic Geology and Technology; he was promoted to director of the bureau in 1915 and held that position until his death. He held membership in several scientific societies including the American Association for the Advancement of Science, (Fellow, 1906) Geological Society of America, American Association of Petroleum Geologists, Sigma Xi, and the Illinois, Iowa, Oklahoma, and Texas (Fellow) Academies of Science. In 1929 he was elected honorary member of the Society of Economic Paleontologists and Mineralogists.
His fields of investigation included stratigraphic and areal geology, work of the atmosphere, till in the upper Mississippi Valley, clastic sediments, and related subjects. His published papers on these subjects number about 100 titles. He was one of the first in America to point out and stress the value of seismograph observations for locating geologic structure. He discovered potash in the Permian Basin of Texas and was the first to suggest the likelihood of finding oil on university lands in West Texas. In recognition of his distinguished service in sciences Dr. Udden was awarded in 1911 by King Gustavus Fifth of Sweden.
