Johann Christoph Adelung: Grammatisch-kritisches Wörterbuch der Hochdeutschen Mundart. Nach der Ausgabe letzter Hand 17931801 Band 6 von 6 TZ Edition Holzinger. Großformat, 216 x 279 mm, zweispaltiger Satz Berliner Ausgabe, 2014 Vollständiger, durchgesehener Neusatz bearbeitet und eingerichtet von Michael Holzinger Mit dem »Wörterbuch der hochdeutschen Mundart« schuf Johann Christoph Adelung (1732-1806) das erste Großwörterbuch der deutschen Sprache. Das legendäre Nachschlagewerk, dessen erste Auflage zwischen 1774 und 1786 im Leipziger Verlag Breitkopf und Sohn erschien, beschreibt in rund 60.000 Artikeln detailliert die Herkunft, die Bedeutung und die Verwendung des deutschen Wort- und Sprachschatzes in der Mitte und am Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts und dokumentiert damit in einzigartiger Weise den Entwicklungsstand der Sprache am Beginn des klassischen Zeitalters der deutschen Literatur. Bei der »zweyten, vermehrten und verbesserten Ausgabe« des Wörterbuchs handelt es sich im Gegensatz zu allen späteren Ausgaben um die letzte Ausgabe, die Johann Christoph Adelung noch selbst besorgt hat. Gegenüber der ersten Auflage ist sie nicht nur um rund 1.000 Stichwörter erweitert, sondern zeichnet sich auch durch eine stringentere Form der Artikel und eine größere Aktualität der Belege und Zitate aus. Wörter, vor deren Gebrauch Adelung warnen wollte, kennzeichnete der Sprachforscher teils mit einem Sternchen (*), teils mit einem Kreuz (). Merkwürdigerweise findet sich in seinem Wörterbuch jedoch keine Auflösung dieser Siglen. Eine Erklärung für die Verwendung dieser Zeichen gab Adelung allein in der Vorrede zum ersten Band des »Auszug aus dem grammatisch-kritischen Wörterbuch« (Leipzig 1793, S. VIII), wo das Sternchen (*) als Hinweis auf »veralteten oder nur in bestimmten Fällen üblichen« Wortschatz und das Kreuz () als Hinweis auf »niedrigen« Stil gedeutet wird. In der Praxis läßt sich diese Deutung allerdings nicht immer nachvollziehen. Sicher scheint nur, daß sie der Abwertung der Wörter und der Warnung vor ihrem Gebrauch dienten. In 1759 he was appointed professor at the gymnasium of Erfurt, but relinquished this situation two years later and went to reside in a private capacity at Leipzig, where he devoted himself to philological researches. In 1787 he received the appointment of principal librarian to the elector of Saxony at Dresden, where he continued to reside until his death in 1806.
No man before Jakob Grimm did so much for German.
His works played a huge role in the normalization and unification of the German literary language, the works of Adelung immediately preceded the development in Germany of scientific linguistics.
