The Knight"s Cross of the Iron Cross and its higher grade Oak Leaves was awarded to recognise extreme battlefield bravery or successful military leadership. Johann-Georg Richert was captured by Soviet troops on 8 May 1945. He was charged and convicted with war crimes and was executed by hanging on 30 January 1946 in Minsk.
