This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. Spurzheim was born near Trier, Germany, on December 31, 1776.
He studied medicine at the University of Vienna.
He became acquainted with Gall in 1800 and was soon hired by him as an assistant. Gall intended to have Spurzheim as his successor and added his name as a co-author to books and publications. But in 1813 the two separated.
Spurzheim lectured with considerable success in England and France, and was extending his propaganda to the United States when he died at Boston, Massachusetts, on the 10th of November 1832.
Spurzheim made many alterations to Gall's phrenological system, including an increase in the number of "organs", as well as its organization into a hierarchical system. Spurzheim also used images and busts to illustrate the craniographic approach of phrenology.
His works include: Anatomie et physiologic du systeme nerveux (1810-1820); Observations sur la phrenologie (1810); The Physiognomical Systems of Drs Gall and Spurzheim (1815), and Essai philosophique sur la nature de l'homme (1820).
