Einleitung in die Philosophie or Introduction to Philosophy was intended by Walch to be a companion to the earlier Lexicon, as the full title suggests: Introduction to Philosophy, Which Explains All Its Parts, Indicates their Proper Connections, and Gives an Account of the Origin and History of Each Discipline, Especially for Use with the Philosophical Lexicon. Divided into three parts, the Einleitung contains extensive historical introductions to philosophical disciplines throughout the ages. The first part examines the 'Character of Philosophical Cognition'. The second deals with the 'Disciplines' of philosophy, namely logic, metaphysics, natural philosophy, ethics, doctrine of virtue, philosophy of law, and political philosophy, and the third concerns 'Philosophical Secrets' or the teaching on the mind (Geist) or souls. Much of Walch's philosophy is reminscent of Kant and some philosophers have argued that he should be counted as one of Kant's predecessors. This reprint will provide academics with important evidence to analyse this issue and the opportunity to fully understand the relationship between the two strands of the German Enlightenment, initiated by its two 'founders', Christian Thomasius and Christian Wolff. First published in 1727, this reprint is of the rare third improved edition (1738) which contains an extensive index. Now reprinted in two volumes, with an introduction by Manfred Kuehn, this valuable work provides a succinct and systematic account of philosophy. The availability of the Einleitung and Lexicon will allow historians of philosophy the opportunity to fully examine the work of an influential eighteenth-century German philosopher.

He was born at Meiningen, where his father, Georg Walch, was general superintendent.
He studied at Leipzig and Jena, amongst his teachers being JF Buddeus, whose only daughter he married.
He published in 1716 a work, Historia critica Latinae linguae, which soon came into wide use. Two years later he became professor extraordinarius of philosophy at Jena. In 1719, he was appointed professor ordinarius of rhetoric, in 1721 of poetry, and in 1724 professor extraordinarius of theology.
In 1728 he became professor ordinarius of theology, and in 1750 professor primarius.
His university lectures and published works ranged over the wide fields of church history in its various branches, particularly the literature and the controversies of the church, dogmatics, ethics and pastoral theology. (1740–1752); Historische und theologische Einleitung in die religiösen Streitigkeiten, welche sonderlich ausser der evangelische-lutherischen Kirche entstanden (5 vols, 1733 ff).
The companion work to this, Einleitung in die Religionsstreitigkeiten der evangel.-lutheran Kirche (1730–1739), and Philosophisches Lexikon (1726, 4th ed 1775).
Also important is the Historia logicae, published at Leipzig in 1721.

Johann Georg Walch died in Jena, Germany, on 13 January 1775 at 81 years of age.
In 1823 he started the well-known medical weekly paper, the Lancet, and began a series of attacks on the jobbery in vogue among the practitioners of the day, who were accustomed to treat the medical profession as a close borough.
Of his works the most valuable were Bibliotheca theologica (1757- 3765); Bibliotheca pairistica (1770, new ed. 1834); his edition of Luther's works in 24 vols. (1740 - 1752); Historiscke und theologiscfw Einleitung in die religiosen Sireiligkeiten, welche sonderlick ausser der ev. -lutherischen Kirche entslanden (5 vols. , 1733 ff. ); the companion work to this, Einleitung in die Religionsstreitigkeiten der evangel, luth. Kirche (1730 - 1739), and Pkilosophisches Lexikon (1726, 4th ed. 1775).
He became a radical candidate for parliament, and in 1835 was returned for Finsbury, retaining his seat till 1852. In this capacity, and also as coroner for West Middlesex-an appointment he secured in 1839-he was indefatigable in upholding the interests of the working classes and advocating humanitarian reforms, as well as in pursuing his campaign against medical restrictions and abuses; and he made the Lancet not only a professional organ but a powerful engine of social reform.
