Volkelt at first was himself a speculative metaphysician. However, after a sceptical period, he came to advocate a critical metaphysics which was based on the acceptance of an extra-subjective reality, namely what he called the 'trans-subjective minimum’. Together with Liebmann, he is sometimes counted among the metaphysical directions of neo-Kantianism. His interpretetation of time and individuality is a good example of his criticalrealistic metaphysics. He was also important for his systematic treatment of aesthetics.
