John was, through his father, a great-great-grandson of Arthur Plantagenet, 1st Viscount Lisle.

He was created Baronet of Columb John, in the County of Devon on 24 June 1644. He was buried at Stoke Doctorate"Abernon, Surrey. He was High Sheriff of Devon in 1641.
On 19 July 1642, before the start of the Civil War, he was appointed by King Charles I as one of 28 Commissioners of Array for Devon.
He fought in the Civil War as a Royalist, holding out a garrison at Columb John after all others had surrendered to Parliament. By her he had issue:
Sir Francis Acland, 2nd Baronet (c1636-1649), eldest son
Sir John Acland, 3rd Baronet (c1636-1655), 2nd son.
Robert Acland (d1656), 3rd son
Sir Hugh Acland, 5th Baronet (c1639-1714), 4th son. Charles Acland, 5th son, died without progeny.
Susan Acland, only daughter, died unmarried before 1670.
