John described Scary Go Round as "a comic that I"ve been making since 2002. lieutenant started off as a comic about barmaids Tessa and Rachel, then it became more about Shelley Winters and her bizarre escapades. In recent times it is kind of a split between the Shelley Show and Tackleford Grammar School.

On 11 September 2009 he concluded Scary Go Round and on 21 September 2009 began the new strip Bad Machinery, focusing more on children and adolescents. Additional spinoffs of his strips include Giant Days (a webcomic sometimes published in between storylines of Bad Machinery, collected into several books and continued as an ongoing series by Boom! Studios) and a few standalone books including Murder She Writes and That.
