John Williams Andrews

Background

Mr. John Andrews was born in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, United States, on November 10, 1898. He was a son of Charles McLean and Evangeline (Walker) Andrews.

Education

John Williams Andrews draduated from Yale University with Bachelor of Arts degree in 1920 and with Juris Doctor in 1926.

Career

Mr. Andrews worked as a manager of Chung Mei News Agency, and International News correspondent, Peking, China, from 1921 to 1922. During 1922-1923 he was a legislative correspondent of New Haven Journal Carrier, New Haven, CT. In 1927 he was admitted to the Bar of New York State. Between 1926-1932 John Andrews served as a lawyer of Root, Clark, Buckner & Ballantine (law firm), New York.

John Andrews held the post of a special instructor in history department, and fellow at Timothy Dwight College at Yale University, New Haven, 1938-1940. He was an assistant to administrator, Connecticut State Defense Council, 1940-1942. During 1942-1948 Mr. Andrews acted as a chief of Federal State Relations Section of U.S. Department of Justice, Washington, DC.

He was appointed trial attorney in Anti-Trust Division from 1948 to 1950. Between 1951 and 1952 Mr. Andrews was a director of Washington Institute of Mental Hygiene, Washington, DC. He was a member of public relations council, Hill & Knowlton, Inc., 1952-1953, president, Andrews Associates, Inc., 1954-1962, freelance writer, 1932-1975.

During the period of 1947-1948 John Andrews served as an administrative vice chair, National Conference on Prevention and Control of Juvenile Delinquency. He worked at Washington Housing Association as a vice president, 1947-1952, president, 1952. He also acted as a vice chair and trustee, Lingnan University, Canton, China, and then director, Cooper Hill Writers’ Conference, East Dover, VT.

Mr. Andrews married Elizabeth Robert on July 14, 1934 (divorced, 1953) and later Miriam Benton Wise on October 30, 1953. He had one son from the first marriage: John Douglas Walker.
