Mr. Ausland began his twenty-five-year career in the foreign service in 1949 after serving as a captain in the U.S. Army during World War II. Among his posts with the U.S. Department of State were Berlin, West Germany, and Belgrade, Yugoslavia. In 1965, Ausland served as political adviser to the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and in 1973 and 1974 acted as the executive secretary to the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT) for the U.S. delegation in Geneva, Switzerland. Ausland also authored several works. John Campbell Ausland died of cancer on May 13, 1996, in Oslo, Norway.
