BERNARD, John Henry was born on July 27, 1860 in India. Son of late W. F. Bernard, Commander of Order of Leopold.

Studied at private school. Trinity College, Dublin (Scholar) 1879. Senior Moderator iu Mathematics and in Philosophy, 1880.

Wray prize, 1880; M‘Cullagh prize, 1883. Madden prize, 1883; Master of Arts 1883. Bachelor of Divinity 1888.

Doctor of Divinity 1892. Tutor Trinity College 1884. Doctor of Divinity.

Career

Ordained 1886; chaplain to Lord Lieut, of Ireland, 1886-1902. Examining Chaplain to Bishop (Reeves) of Down, 1889. Member of University Council, 1892.

Select preacher, Oxford, 1893-1895. Cambridge, 1898,1901, 1904. Warden, Alexandra College Dublin for higher education of women, 1903.

Vice-President of Royal Irish Academy, 1902. Member of General Synod of Church of Ireland, 1894. Member of Representative Church Body, 1897.

Commissioner of National Education, Ireland, 1897- 1903. Visitor of Queen’s College, Galway. Honourable Doctor of Civil Law (Durham), 1905.

Honourable Doctor of Divinity (Aberdeen), 1906. Dean of St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin, since 1902; Archbishop King’s Professor of Divinity University of Dublin since 1888; Fellow of Trim College, Dublin, 1884-1902; Treasurer of St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin, 1897-1902.
