(Executions in the United States are hidden from public vi...)
Executions in the United States are hidden from public view. Laws severely restrict the number of witnesses and journalists, and television cameras are forbidden in prison execution chambers. Capital punishment is cloaked in added secrecy because executions are often performed in the middle of the night.

(Minnesota is one of only twelve states that does not allo...)
Minnesota is one of only twelve states that does not allow the death penalty, but that was not always the case. In fact, until 1911 executions in the state were legal and frequently carried out. In Legacy of Violence, John D. Bessler takes us on a compelling journey through the history of lynchings and state-sanctioned executions that dramatically shaped Minnesota’s past.Through personal accounts of those involved with the events, Bessler traces the history of both famous and lesser-known executions and lynchings in Minnesota, the state’s anti-death penalty and anti-lynching movements, and the role of the media in the death penalty debate.

(The Birth of American Law: An Italian Philosopher and the...)
The Birth of American Law: An Italian Philosopher and the American Revolution tells the forgotten, untold story of the origins of U.S. law. Before the Revolutionary War, a 26-year-old Italian thinker, Cesare Beccaria, published On Crimes and Punishments, a runaway bestseller that shaped the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution, and early American laws. America's Founding Fathers, including early U.S. Presidents, avidly read Beccaria's book a product of the Italian Enlightenment that argued against tyranny and the death penalty.

(During the Dark Ages and the Renaissance, Europes monarch...)
During the Dark Ages and the Renaissance, Europes monarchs often resorted to torture and executions. The pain inflicted by instruments of torture from the thumbscrew and the rack to the Inquisition s tools of torment was eclipsed only by horrific methods of execution, from breaking on the wheel and crucifixion to drawing and quartering and burning at the stake.

(The Baron and the Marquis explores the history of the max...)
The Baron and the Marquis explores the history of the maxim that articulates what is now known as the parsimony principle. That maxim shaped the American and French Revolutions, and it set the dividing line between tyranny and liberty. Jefferson believed only absolute necessity justified punishment, and the French Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen (1789) similarly allowed only strictly and obviously necessary punishments. In The Baron and the Marquis, award-winning author John Bessler shows the maxim s modern-day implications for capital punishment, prolonged solitary confinement, and mass incarceration, arguing that unnecessary punishments are excessive and cruel and unusual.
