John Boodin

Pjätteryd Parish in Älmhult, Kronoberg County, Sweden

He was the author of numerous books proposing a systematic interpretation of nature. Boodin also focused on the social nature of human behavior believing an understanding required an appreciation of individual participation in social life and interpersonal relationship. During his lifetime additional siblings continued to settle in America. He emigrated to the United States from Småland, Sweden in 1887 at the age of 18. He was later educated at the University of Colorado at Boulder and University of Minnesota where he was influenced by the psychologists James Rowland Angell, William James, and Josiah Royce. He studied philosophy under James Seth at Brown University where he earned his Bachelor of Arts and M. A. before doctoral work at Harvard University, where he received his Doctor of Philosophy in 1899. Boodin held positions at Grinnell College (1900–1904), the University of Kansas (1904–1913), Carleton College, Minnesota (1913–1927), University of Southern California, and University of California at Los Angeles (1927–1928). During his professional career and into his retirement, he published eight books He also wrote more than sixty articles for various scholarly journals. The workpapers of John Elof Boodin are maintained at the University of California Los Angeles Library Special Collections.

Excerpt from Truth and Reality: An Introduction to the Theory of Knowledge It is my hope that this volume may serve a purpose as an introduction to the theory of knowledge. While we have pretentious works covering the field of logic and episteraology, we are not so well supplied with books giving a general survey of the main problems involved in the investigation of truth. The time seems peculiarly ripe for such an effort In the bewildering amount of discussion and misunderstanding to which the pragmatic movement has led, there is need for fresh emphasis of the main issues. There is also need for building out the pragmatic theory in neglected directions. In a small way, this book tries to serve both purposes. This book is intended to be used in connection with a course in elementary logic or as an introduction or sequel to it. It is hoped that its human interest will also make it available for the general philosophic reader and as an introduction to philosophy. To the cultured public, not technically trained in philosophy, the first and the last chapters may be of special interest. My relation to the pragmatic movement will be clear enough in the course of the text. It may be of interest that the larger part of Chapter XVII, "The Reality of Religious Ideals," was given as a lecture at Harvard in 1899, practically before the movement had started. Excerpt from A Realistic Universe: An Introduction to Metaphysics This volume on metaphysics is the sequel of a volume on the theory of knowledge, entitled "Truth and Reality," which was published in 1911. The two volumes furnish a survey of the field of general philosophy from the point of view of pragmatic realism. This attitude which the author has been championing for several years is an attempt to apply scientific method to philosophic problems. The term pragmatic is used in the sense which was first advocated by C. S. Peirce, and which is defined by the author in his own terms in "Truth and Reality." As applied to metaphysics the pragmatic method means that we must judge the nature of reality, in its various grades and complexities, by the consequences to the realization of human purposes, instead of by a priori assumptions. Some may prefer the older adjectives of "empirical" or "critical"; but these terms seem definitely associated with certain historical doctrines, and a new term seems to be preferable in designating the scientific tendency of to-day. There is need in every age of retranslating the perennial problems of philosophy into terms of living human interest; and the author hopes in a measure to further this movement at the present time through these volumes. In "A Realistic Universe" the author has tried to make vital the fundamental problems of metaphysics in terms of our present thought-world, without the cant of the past, but with a deep sense of indebtedness to the masters of all time. While the book is intended primarily for the philosophic student, the aim has been to make the style as clear and simple as the problems would permit. In the use of scientific material, an effort has been made to find sources which would be intelligible to the layman rather than to make an appearance of erudition. Some portions, such as the introductory chapter and part five on Form, may be of special interest to the general reader. Background

John Elof Boodin was born in Pjätteryd Parish in Älmhult, Kronoberg County, Sweden. Boodin was a younger son of sizable rural family.

Education

He attended the mission training school established by Swedish Lutheran missionary Peter Fjellstedt in Uppsala. Boodin subsequently attended Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois.

Career

Achievements

Among many honors bestowed upon him were his election in 1937 to membership in the permanent council of the World Congress of Philosophy. Membership in the Authors" Club of London. Appointment as Sir John Adams Lecturer in 1935 and as Faculty Research Lecturer in 1937 at the University of California at Los Los Angeles He served as director of the Los Angeles Public Library Lectures on Philosophy and as president of The Metaphysical Society in Los Los Angeles He also served as president of the American Philosophical Association, Western Division (1932-1933).
