( About the Book Biographical books, or bios, are detaile...)
About the Book Biographical books, or bios, are detailed descriptions of a person's life. A biography is more than simply the basic facts like education, work, relationships, and death. It portrays a person's experience of major life events. A biography presents a subject's life story, emphasizing certain aspects of his or her life, and including intimate details of their experiences, which may include an analysis of their personality. Biographical works are generally non-fiction, but fictional works can also be used to portray a person's life. An in-depth form of biographical coverage is referred to as legacy writing. An authorized biography refers to a book written with the permission, cooperation, and at times, participation of the subject or the subject's heirs. An autobiography, on the other hand, is written by the person themselves, sometimes with the assistance of a collaborator or “ghostwriter”. Also in this Book An almanac is an annual publication that lists a set of events in the following year, including such information as weather forecasts, farmers' planting dates, tide tables, and other data in tabular form. Celestial figures and a wide range of statistics are to be found in almanacs, including the rising and setting times of the Sun and Moon, dates of eclipses, hours of high and low tides, and dates of religious festivals. In the United States Benjamin Franklin began publishing Poor Richard's Almanack from 1733-1758, and Benjamin Banneker, a free African-American, published a number of almanacs from 1792 to 1797. ( About the Book The Americas were settled by people migr...)
About the Book The Americas were settled by people migrating from Asia at the height of an Ice Age 15,000 years ago. There was no contact with Europeans until Vikings appeared briefly in the 10th century, and the voyages of Christopher Columbus from 1492. America's Indigenous peoples were the Paleo-Indians, who were initially hunter-gatherers. Post 1492, Spanish, Portuguese and later English, French and Dutch colonialists arrived, conquering and settling the discovered lands over three centuries, from the early 16th to the early 19th centuries. The United States achieved independence from England in 1776, while Brazil and the larger Hispanic American nations declared independence in the 19th century. Canada became a federal dominion in 1867. Also in this Book United States history began with the migrations of Indigenous people prior to 15,000 BC. Christopher Columbus's 1492 expedition enabled European colonization, with most colonies formed after 1600. By the 1770s, 13 British colonies held 2.5 million people along the Atlantic coast east of the Appalachians. The British government imposed new taxes after 1765 and would not agree to the colonists having a say in their determination. The American War of Independence, 1775–1783, ensued, resulting in independence, and another war was declared against Britain in 1812. The next 50 years saw the expansion of American states and territories through the west, however growth was curtailed by the costly American Civil War, which broke out in 1861 over the Confederate States' wish to continue the practice of slavery, and the Union's wish to preserve the union. By 1865 some 620,000 people died, making it the most costly in US history. Alaska was purchased from Russia in 1867. The next decades up to World War 1 saw large migrations from Europe and massive growth in the US economy. The US had a short but decisive influence on World War 1, suffered during the Great Depression, and had an even greater decisive influence on the outcome of World War 2. The US then engaged in a Cold War with its military and ideological adversary, the USSR, which disintegrated in 1991. Over the 20th century the US was not just a dynamo of technological advancement, but also contributed greatly to world growth. As the first American dramatization, John Brougham’s adaptation of “David Copperfield” opened at New York’s Lyceum Theatre in 1851 and was an immediate success. It was considered by its peers to be one of the best adaptations of the novel. Staying true to Dickens’ version, Brougham did not take liberties with the original text unlike other adaptations. Brougham’s skill as a playwright is evident as he brings Dickens’ classic characters to life on the stage. The play would continue to be produced for the next two decades 19th Century actor, playwright and theatre producer, John Brougham was a prolific playwright having written over 120 plays, burlesques, comedies, and musical extravaganzas earning him the nickname “The American Aristophanes” from critics of the time.

About the Book Satire is a genre of literature where vices, follies, abuses, and shortcomings in humans and their institutions are held up to ridicule with the intent of shaming individuals, corporations, government, or society itself into reform. John Brougham was born on May 9, 1810 in Dublin, of Irish and French ancestry.
John studied at Trinity College and the Peter Street Hospital.
By the time when John Brougham was twenty, family adversity cut short his medical career, and he went to London and drifted into the theatre, in July 1830. In 1831 he was a member of Mme. Vestris's company at the Olympic, following her to Covent Garden, where, so he always affirmed, he supplied Dion Boucicault with the idea of London Assurance.
In 1840 he managed the London Lyceum, and wrote several plays for its repertoire. He began his American career as Felix O'Callaghan in His Last Legs at the Park Theatre, New York, October 4, 1842, and thereafter was chiefly identified with the United States.
He joined Burton's company as an actor and playwright at the famous Chambers Street Theatre, New York, and while there wrote many plays and burlesques, including a dramatization of Dombey and Son in which Burton played Captain Cuttle. For this he received, he later declared, only $250.
In 1850 he opened Brougham's Lyceum, on the corner of Broadway and Broome St. , New York, but lost on the venture because the public thought the theatre walls unsafe after an adjoining building was torn down. He then revived King John at the Bowery, and later joined Wallack's company, meanwhile continuing prolific as a playwright.
For Wallack, he made, among other works, a dramatization of Bleak House, and wrote perhaps his most famous burlesque, Pocahontas. That Indian maiden had already served as the heroine of more than one romantic play, and Brougham had lively fun with them all, though his burlesque is marred for us to-day by its incessant stream of puns. He presently rejoined Burton, and wrote another famous burlesque, Columbus, one of his most interesting plays, not without a touch of dignity and pathos amid its fun.
In 1860 he went to England and acted there for five years, and also made for Charles Fechter an English version of The Duke's Motto, for which he declared he was rewarded with a box of cigars, He returned to America in 1865 and never went abroad again.
On January 25, 1869 he opened Brougham's Theatre on West Twenty-fourth St. , New York, with Better Late Than Never and The Dramatic Review for 1868, a forerunner of the reviews of the twentieth century. But the owner of the theatre, the notorious Jim Fisk, Jr. , was dissatisfied with the box office returns, or pretended to be, and took the house away from him. This was his last effort at management.
On January 17, 1878, after he had become distressingly poor, a testimonial benefit was held for him at the Academy of Music, and yielded the sum of $10, 000 which was settled on him as an annuity.
He died on June 7, 1880.
John Brougham wrote, during his fifty years on the stage, about seventy-five dramatic pieces and played a great variety of parts. His best work as author was probably his broadly comic and burlesque writing, and his best work as actor was his impersonation of comic characters (especially Irish) who were also gentlemen. His burlesques had a contemporary freshness, and his acting a genial ease, which foreshadowed more modern methods. He was the founder of the Lotus Club in New York, and for a time its president.

John Brougham was a member of the Lotus Club in New York, and for a time its president.
He himself was gay, full of contagious animal spirits, kindly, generous to a fault, unfailingly courteous, and something of a scholar. His witty curtain speeches were famous, and socially he was extremely popular, being a handsome man of medium height and sturdy stature, with a sparkling discourse, a ready wit, and charming manners.
In all business matters he was a trusting child, however, and his later life was clouded by his financial distresses resulting from this temperamental carelessness.
Brougham was first married to Emma Williams, an English actress and beauty, from whom he soon separated.
His second wife was Annette Nelson (Mrs. Hodges), daughter of an English naval officer, but herself an actress. She died in 1870.
