Entered mercantile life at Liverpool, 1857. Served John Hutchinson and Company, alkali manufacturers of Widnes, 1801-1872. In company with Ludwig Mond, Fellow of the Royal Society, he established (1873) the Alkali Works at Northwich, which became the largest in the world.
Presented Northwich with a public library. Runcorn and Winsford with Guildhalls for the use of Trade Unions, Friendly and other Societies. Benefactor to Liverpool University, Witton Grammar School, and several public libraries.
Member of Royal Commission for Paris Exhibition, 1000. Of Royal Commission on Canals and Waterways, 1006. Member of Civil List Committee, 1001.
