John Cairns was born in Scotland, United Kingdom.
He migrated to the United States in the early eighties, and shortly after settled in St. Louis. Mr. Cairns is credited with having planned a number of that city's early buildings of which the most important were the Presbyterian Church (or the Giddings Church as it was sometimes known) at Sarah and Washington Streets; Forrest Park University, a school for girls, and several fine homes of that period, of which the MacLaren residence on Lindall Boulevard was a distinguished example. Mr. Cairns was also architect of the Pettis County Court House at Sedalia, Mo., built prior to 1885.
