John Murray Carnochan was born on July 4, 1817 in Savannah, Georgia, United States; the son of John Carnochan, a wealthy Scotch merchant and planter, and of Harriet Frances Putnam, a collateral descendant of Gen. Israel Putnam.
On account of delicate health he was raised in Scotland, in the Carnochan homestead (Gate House, Fleet, Kirkcudbright, Galloway) and in Edinburgh, where he graduated from the high school and University (1834) and began the study of medicine.
Summoned home, he completed his medical studies in New York, registering as a pupil with Valentine Mott, who was to speak of him later as "his most distinguished pupil. " It was at this period that he made a remarkable minute dissection of the human foot.
Having received the degree of M. D. from the College of Physicians and Surgeons, New York, in 1836, he at once returned to Europe for post-graduate study, spending six full years in the Paris hospitals, walking the hospital wards with the leading local surgeons, including such men as Lisfranc, Velpeau, and Civiale.
He then removed to London where he studied surgery under Sir Astley Cooper and Sir Benjamin Brodie and was offered a partnership by the surgeon Liston. He did not return to America until 1847.
In 1847 Carnochan located in New York as a general practitioner. In 1851 he received the appointment of surgeon-in-chief of the new State Emigrant Hospital at Ward's Island, then the largest in the country, while from 1851 to 1862 he was professor of surgery at the New York Medical College. Beginning in 1851 he performed and published an account of a brilliant series of operations which gave him an international reputation, and in 1858 he published his first series of Contributions to Operative Surgery and Surgical Pathology.
It was said of him that he had performed every capital operation, this including five cases of successful amputation at the hip joint.
Among his interesting case reports was one on survival for eleven days with a bullet in the heart, the patient having been the notorious "Bill" Poole. During 1870-71, he reappeared in public life as health officer of the port. A consultation with a colleague who had been accused of flirting with homeopathic remedies led to a breach with the medical profession, terminated by Carnochan's resignation from the New York County Medical Society. From that period his chief interest was in the New York Medico-Legal Society. Continuing to publish his Contributions to Operative Surgery, he issued a series in 1877-78 and was at work on another volume when stricken with apoplexy. His last monograph, Cerebral Localization in Relation to Insanity, appeared in 1884. Upon his death he was highly eulogized as a surgeon and man by the Medico-Legal Society.
