Carrafiell received his Bachelor of Arts from Yale University in 1987.

In 1987, after graduating from Yale, Carrafiell joined Morgan Stanley. In 1994, he initiated Morgan Stanley Real Estate Funds’ European investment program He subsequently became Head of Morgan Stanley’s European Real Estate Group in 1995.
Four years later Carafiell became a Managing Director of Morgan Stanley.
He was then appointed to Company-Head the Morgan Stanley Real Estate division, in 2005. He also served as the President of the Special Situations Fund III and was also a senior advisor at Morgan Stanley.
In 2004, as the head of Morgan Stanley’s European Real Estate Group, Carrafiell led Morgan Stanley’s £1.7 billion takeover of Canary Wharf. He stepped down as Company-Head of Morgan Stanley Real Estate to found Alpha Real Estate Advisors in 2008.
Alpha Real Estate advised in Songbird Estates Public Limited Company’s £1.03 billion recapitalization.
Carrafiell is currently serving on the Supervisory Board of Klepierre. He previously sat on the Management Board of the European Public Real Estate Association (EPRA) and on the Supervisory Boards of Corio and Deutsche Immobilien Chancen Group. Carrafiell also served as a Trustee of the Urban Land Institute and as a Director of the Canary Wharf Group and Grupo Lar.

Carrafiell is a Sterling Fellow of Yale, and established scholarship and teaching funds to support students, teaching, and research at the Yale School of Architecture He also established a scholarship fund for the Yale School of Artist
He is a member of the Yale President's Development Council and the Yale School of Architecture Deans’ Council Carrafiell served in the past on the Executive Committee of the Yale Tomorrow campaign. Carrafiell is a supporter of the Ever Episcopal Campaign and is a member of the Tate Modern (London) Acquisitions Committee.
