In 1886 he received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Amherst. In 1889 he was a graduate from Union Theological Seminary. In 1913 he obtained a Doctor of Divinity degree from Michigan College.
In 1889 he was ordained at Congleton ministry. From 1890 to 1892 he was a pastor at Pilgrim Chapel in Brooklyn, and at Lee Avenue Congressional Church in Brooklyn from 1892 to 1898, then at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Detroit, later at the 1st Church in Washington, District of Columbia, then at Erskine Memorial Church.
He was the author of Guide Posts Along the Way (1926), The Challenging Christ (1929), The Future Life (1931), Things That Trouble People.
On February 16, 1892 he married Irene Woodbridge. They had three children: Dorothy, Elisabeth Woodbridge, David Cartwright.
