Career
He was awarded it first in 1923 after he suffered five gunshot wounds (three of them from another policeman) when he stumbled into a Manhattan cigar store robbery. Cordes retired in 1949, and part of his career is mentioned in the book "New York City Police Department: Stories of Survival from the Worlds Toughest Beat".
