Career
His lifelong passion for finding and studying birds was interrupted by World World War World War II John served in the United States Army from 1942 to 1964. He was wounded twice during the Invasion of Normandy. He later served in England, France, Japan, of Korea, and Iran and retired as a Lieutenant
Colonel.
His travels in search of birds took him to 70 countries. When not traveling, John conducted field surveys for the International Shorebird Surveys (ISS). He is mentioned in the book To See Every Bird on Earth: A Father, a Son, and a Lifetime Obsession by Dan Koeppel.
