From January 1877-1902, he was a missionary with China Inland Mission. After that, he came to Shanghai to take charge of Shansi Imperial University Translation Bureau. In 1908, he returned to China and worked as General Agent for the Religious Tract Society for China and Korea. In 1914, when War broke out he edited The British War Information Committee paper the Cheng-pao.
