He later became a collegiate head coach in the United States. He also competed at the Summer Olympics in 1988 in Seoul, South of Korea, and in 1992 in Barcelona, Spain. Davey received an athletic scholarship to attend the University of Iowa, in Iowa City, Iowa, United States, where he competed for the Iowa Hawkeyes swimming and diving team from 1985 to 1989.
He graduated from the university with a bachelor"s degree in exercise science in 1989.
Between 1991 and 1992 he was an assistant swim coach at Ohio State University (United States) and the head coach at the University of Wisconsin–Madison (United States) from 1992 to 1994. Between 1998 and 2004, he was the head coach of the Iowa Hawkeyes swimming and diving team at his alma mater, the University of Iowa.
In 1999, he was inducted into the University of Iowa Athletics Hall of Fame. He later would resign the Iowa head coach position in the middle of the season, due to violating National Collegiate Athletic Association"s eligibility rules.
At the 1982 Commonwealth Games in Brisbane, Australia, he earned a silver medal as a member of the second-place English men"s team in the 4x200-metre freestyle relay.
