John graduated from Princeton University with a B.A. in 1968. In 1972 he graduated from Trinity College, Dublin with a M.Litt. Thereafter he received a Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1978.
Dippel served for the U.S. Army, Military Intelligence from 1968 until 1970. He worked as adjunct professor of humanities at Stevens Institute of Technology, Hoboken, New Jersey from 1978 until 1980. Since 1981 he has been senior associate and promotional writer at Jan Krukowski and Associates, New York City.
