He received a formal education at Harvard University, graduating there from at the age of twenty-two, subsequently entered the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to study for an architectural career.
After a few years of draftsmanship in Boston, he went to New York to join the large office of McKim, Mead & White and continued on the drafting staff there for two years, later worked with George Post for a time, and in 1900 was associated with Cass Gilbert on plans for the Union Club.
In 1901 he was elected to the New York Chapter. A.I.A., and in 1910 after moving to Newport was transferred to the Rhode Island Chapter. Mr. DuFais was also one of the founders and an early president of the New York Architectual League.
