He graduated from the University of Hull with a Bachelor"s Degree in economics, politics and sociology in 1983.
He serves as the Chief Executive Officer of Pearson Public Limited Company.
Fallon started his career as a researcher for Labour politician John Prescott in 1988. He served as the Director of Corporate Affairs at Powergen, now known as East.ON United Kingdom, from 1992 to 1997. He became the Director of Communications of Pearson in 1997.
He served on the Board of Directors of Interactive Data Corporation from 2000 to 2007.
He has been the Chief Executive Officer of Pearson since 2013, replacing Marjorie Scardino. In 2013, he decided to part ways with the adult education unit in the United Kingdom, Pearson in Practice, which provided apprenticeships to put adults back to work, as it was unprofitable.
He has also promoted tablet computers as opposed to textbooks. In September 2014, he established Project Literacy, "a social movement "that will make headway on giving every person access to the tools they need to become literate,"" in Pearson"s own words.
In 2015, he spearheaded a partnership with Save the Children to offer education opportunities to Syrian refugees who are children.
