Fisher started his professional career at Alex, Brown & Sons. Later on, Fisher's worked at ABS Ventures from 1984 to 1989. The company focused on enterprise software and services. In 1991 became a partner on the Draper Fisher Jurvetson (DFJ) Growth team. Currently, he remains a partner on the DFJ Venture team through Fund X.
He is at present responsible for the firm’s investments in Katerra, Pulsepoint, and Renovate America. Among his previous investments are SafeView (L3); CafeMedia (acquired by Zelnick); Good Technology (acquired by Blackberry); Software Quality Automation, which went public and was later acquired by Rational (IBM); SolarCity, which went public and was later acquired by Tesla (TSLA); Wit Capital, which went public and later merged with SoundView (Schwab), etc. On behalf of various DFJ funds, John sourced the firm's investments in Baidu (BIDU), United Online (UNTD), Hotmail (Microsoft), and Combinet (CSCO).
At present, he's a board member of Good Technology, CafeMom, Pulsepoint, SolarCity, SCIenergy, and Raydiance. Besides, John Fisher serves on the Investment Committees of DFJ Growth Fund (Menlo Park), DFJ Esprit Ventures (London), DFJ ePlanet Ventures (global), and DFJ New England (Boston).
