(Excerpt from The Heart of the Hills Side of the spur, cr...)
Excerpt from The Heart of the Hills Side of the spur, crept tendril-like up two dark ravines, and clearing the feathery green crests of the trees, drifted lazily on upward until, big above, they melted shyly together and into the haze that veiled the drowsy face of the mountain. Each rose from a little log cabin clinging to the side of a little hollow at the head of a little creek. About each cabin was a rickety fence, a patch of garden, and a little cleared hill-side, rocky, full of stumps, and crazily traced with thin green spears of corn. On one hill-side a man was at work with a hoe, and on the other, over the spur, a boy both barefooted, and both in patched jean trou sers upheld by a single suspender that made a wet line over a sweaty cotton shirt: the man, tall, lean, swarthy, grim; the boy grim and dark, too, and with a face that was prematurely aged. At the man's cabin a little girl in purple homespun was hurrying in and out the back door clearing. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. (Serving as tour guide, Fox invites his audience to go wit...)
Serving as tour guide, Fox invites his audience to go with him log rafting down the Kentucky River, bass fishing in the Cumberland Mountains, rabbit hunting in the Bluegrass, and chasing outlaws in the border country of Kentucky and Virginia. Along the route we meet Old South colonels and their ladies, lawless moonshiners and their shy daughters, bloodthirsty preachers, and educated young gentlemen visitors who explore the southern mountains for fun and profit. These sketches offer a delightful blend of macho adventure and sage observation by an erudite young writer who had lived in the two worlds that provide his subject matter-the elegant society of the Bluegrass aristocracy and the hardscrabble feuding clans of mountaineers.

As Clayton rose to his feet in the still air, the tree-tops began to tremble in the gap below him, and a rippling ran through the leaves up the mountain-side. Drawing off his hat he stretched out his arms to meet it, and his eyes closed as the cool wind struck his throat and face and lifted the hair from his forehead. About him the mountains lay like a tumultuous sea-the Jellico Spur, stilled gradually on every side into vague, purple shapes against the broken rim of the sky, and Pine Mountain and the Cumberland Range racing in like breakers from the north.

(This novel by John Fox is a thoughtful reminiscence of sm...)
This novel by John Fox is a thoughtful reminiscence of small town American life in Kentucky, leading up to and during the American Civil War. First released in 1903, this novel follows the residents of the town of Kingdom Come as they mature. The principle character, Chad, is made to grow up quickly as the war affects life in the little town he lives in. Chad is ostracized by members of his family and his friends as he joins the Union Army, believing firmly in the abolition of slavery. His character is marked by compassion and understanding of all the people he encounters, giving the novel a moral element which remains poignant to this day. The divisions present within Kentucky were noted by scholars and historians. Families in the towns and villages of the state were torn asunder by differences of opinion on whether the Union or the Confederacy should be supported. In this book, it is ultimately the choices Chad makes, and his unstinting loyalty to his own innate principles, that forms the deciding elements of this book's plot. Written by John Fox partly in recollection of his own formative years in the 1860s, The Little Shepherd of Kingdom Come was famously adapted by 20th Century Fox into a popular motion picture during the early 1960s. Although elements of the plot were streamlined in the movie, it remained true to the essential morals the author sought to convey.

(John Fox, Jr. (December 16, 1862 - July 8, 1919) was an A...)
John Fox, Jr. (December 16, 1862 - July 8, 1919) was an American journalist, novelist, and short story writer. Though he occasionally wrote for periodicals, after 1904, Fox dedicated much of his attention to fiction. The Little Shepherd of Kingdom Come (published in 1903) and The Trail of the Lonesome Pine (published in 1908) are arguably his most well known and successful works, entering the New York Times top ten list of bestselling novels for 1903, 1904, 1908, and 1909 respectively. Fox visited Letcher County, Kentucky in 1898 and was the inspired setting of these two works. In The Trail of the Lonesome Pine, the character Devil Judd Tolliver, was based on the real life of "Devil John" Wesley Wright, the sheriff of Wise County, Virginia. Many of his works reflected the naturalist style, his childhood in Kentucky's Bluegrass region, and his life among the coal miners of Big Stone Gap, Virginia. Many of his novels were historical romances or period dramas set in that region. John Fox, Jr. died in 1919 of pneumonia in Big Stone Gap, Virginia and was buried in the family plot in Paris, Kentucky. His marriage to Austrian opera singer Fritzi Scheff in 1908 lasted just over four years. He had no children. This edition contains 7 Novels and 25 Short Stories; A Cumberland Vendetta Hell Fer Sartain ( 10 Short Stories ) A Mountain Europa Crittenden The Little Shepherd of Kingdom Come A Knight of the Cumberland The Trail of the Lonesome Pine Christmas Eve on Lonesome ( 5 Short Stories ) The Heart of the Hills In Happy Valley ( 10 Short Stories )

(Webster's edition of this classic is organized to expose ...)
Webster's edition of this classic is organized to expose the reader to a maximum number of synonyms and antonyms for difficult and often ambiguous English words that are encountered in other works of literature, conversation, or academic examinations. Extremely rare or idiosyncratic words and expressions are given lower priority in the notes compared to words which are ¿difficult, and often encountered¿ in examinations. Rather than supply a single synonym, many are provided for a variety of meanings, allowing readers to better grasp the ambiguity of the English language, and avoid using the notes as a pure crutch. Having the reader decipher a word's meaning within context serves to improve vocabulary retention and understanding. Each page covers words not already highlighted on previous pages. If a difficult word is not noted on a page, chances are that it has been highlighted on a previous page. A more complete thesaurus is supplied at the end of the book; synonyms and antonyms are extracted from Webster's Online Dictionary. (Excerpt from Christmas Eve on Lonesome, And, "Hell-Fer-Sa...)
Excerpt from Christmas Eve on Lonesome, And, "Hell-Fer-Sartain": And Other Stories There was the holy hush in the gray twilight that comes only on Christmas Eve. There were the big flakes of snow that fell as they never fall except on Christmas Eve. There was a snowy man on horseback in a big coat, and with saddle pockets that might have been bursting with toys for children in the little cabin at the head of the stream. But not even he knew that it was Christmas Eve. He was thinking of Christmas Eve, but it was of the Christmas Eve of the year before. This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

First published in 1913, The Heart of the Hills is the last novel completed by John Fox Jr. and the final piece in his mountain trilogy. This companion to The Little Shepherd of Kingdom Come and The Trail of the Lonesome Pine is crucial to an understanding of Fox's views. In The Heart of the Hills Fox revises his earlier thoughts about mountain people. He depicts more clearly than in his previous work just how they were exploited by outside industrialists-those men who, in the words of Fox's hero Jason Hawn, "got rich diggin' our coal an' cuttin' our timber." He also reveals the long-term impact of this exploitation on the environment. Having witnessed the ravages of clearcutting on his travels through the mountain country of Kentucky and Virginia in 1911-1912, Fox was all the more receptive to the warnings voiced by his environmentally conscious father. From their letters and diaries it is clear that John Fox Sr.'s influence permeates The Heart of the Hills; in this work, dedicated to his dying father, Fox determined to make amends to the mountain people.

• Two of American author John Fox Jr's westerns are in this Kindle book: Erskine Dale: Pioneer and The Heart Of The Hills (1913) Erskine Dale: Pioneer Deep in the wilderness a boy with a bow and arrow took flight along a buffalo trail. Not far behind him, three grunting savages were taking up the print of his moccassined feet. Soon afterward, a rifle cracked from a watchtower. From the tower old Jerome saw reeds begin to shake in a cane-brake to the left of the spring. “Let him in!” shouted Jerome, and as Dave opened the gates another arrow hurtled between the boy’s upraised arm and his body and stuck quivering in one of its upright bars. “He thinks you air goin’ to take his scalp,” shouted Bud. The Heart Of The Hills (1913) Steve Hawn, a ne'er-do-well and the son of a ne'er-do-well, carries on the family feud. After a long still-hunt in Tokio, and a long pursuit through Manchuria, following that Sun-F lag of Japan, I gave up the chase at Liaoyang. Not being a military expert, my purpose was simply to see under that flag the brown little gun-man as he calls himself in his own tongue in camp and on the march, in trench and in open field, in assault and in retreat; to tell tales of his heroism, chivalry, devotion, sacrifice, incomparable patriotism; to see him fighting, wounded and, since such things in war must be dying, dead. After seven months my spoils of war were post-mortem battle-fields, wounded convalescents in hospitals, deserted trenches, a few graves, and one Russian prisoner in a red shirt. (John Fox (1862-1919) was an American novelist, journalist...)
John Fox (1862-1919) was an American novelist, journalist and short story writer. Though he occasionally wrote for periodicals, Fox dedicated much of his attention to fiction in his later years. Influenced by his childhood in the Kentucky's Bluegrass Region and his life among the coal miners of Big Stone Gap, Virginia, most of his works reflected the naturalist style. Fox's novels were historical romances or period dramas set in that region. "The Little Shepherd of Kingdom Come" (1903) is arguably one of his most well known and successful works. It entered the New York Times top ten list of bestselling novels and stayed there for four years. The work depicts the chaos and confusion of an era when family and national loyalties were often in conflict. Set against the backdrop of the American Civil War, Chadwick Buford, an orphan, is found by an old Major in the mountains of Kentucky. Chadwick ends up joining the Union Army against the South due in part to his new friend.

(Leopold Classic Library is delighted to publish this clas...)
Leopold Classic Library is delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive collection. As part of our on-going commitment to delivering value to the reader, we have also provided you with a link to a website, where you may download a digital version of this work for free. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. Whilst the books in this collection have not been hand curated, an aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature. As a result of this book being first published many decades ago, it may have occasional imperfections. These imperfections may include poor picture quality, blurred or missing text. While some of these imperfections may have appeared in the original work, others may have resulted from the scanning process that has been applied. However, our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. While some publishers have applied optical character recognition (OCR), this approach has its own drawbacks, which include formatting errors, misspelt words, or the presence of inappropriate characters. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with an experience that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic book, and that the occasional imperfection that it might contain will not detract from the experience.

(BCR's Shelf2Life American Civil War Collection is a uniqu...)
BCR's Shelf2Life American Civil War Collection is a unique and exciting collection of pre-1923 titles focusing on the American Civil War and the people and events surrounding it. From memoirs and biographies of notable military figures to firsthand accounts of famous battles and in-depth discussions of slavery, this collection is a remarkable opportunity for scholars and historians to rediscover the experience and impact of the Civil War. The volumes contained in the collection were all written within 60 years of the end of the war, which means that most authors had living memory of it and were facing the effects of the war while writing. These firsthand accounts allow the modern reader to more fully understand the culture of both the Union and Confederacy, the politics that governed the escalation and end of the war, the personal experience of life during the Civil War, and the most difficult and polarizing question in the history of the United States: slavery. The American Civil War Collection allows new readers access to the contemporary arguments and accounts surrounding the war, and is a vital new tool in understanding this important and pivotal chapter in American history.

(This book was originally published prior to 1923, and rep...)

Born in Stony Point, Kentucky, to John William Fox, Senior, and Minerva Worth Carr, Fox studied English at Harvard University. He graduated in 1883 before becoming a reporter in New York City.
After working for both New York Times and the New York Sun, he published a successful serialization of his first novel, A Mountain Europa, in Century magazine in 1892. Two moderately successful short story collections followed, as well as his first conventional novel, The Kentuckians in 1898. Fox gained a following as a war correspondent, working for Harper"s Weekly in Cuba during the Spanish–American War of 1898, where he served with the "Rough Riders." Six years later he traveled to Asia to report on the Russo-Japanese War for Scribner"s magazine.
