French was born at Ripple, United Kingdom on September 28, 1852.
French entered the navy in 1866 but transferred to the army in 1874. He served in the Sudan campaign (1884 - 1885) and was made colonel commanding the 19th Hussars in 1889. In 1897 he was promoted to brigadier, and from 1899 to 1901 he played a distinguished part in the Boer War as major general in command of the cavalry division.
In 1907 he was made a full general, from 1911 to 1914 he was chief of the Imperial General Staff, and in 1913 he was made a field marshal.
When World War I broke out in 1914, he was made commander of the British Expeditionary Force, a post he held during the very costly campaigns of 1914-1915 on the Western Front. He resigned in December 1915 and was made a viscount. From 1915 to 1918 he was commander in chief of the troops in the United Kingdom. Thenceforth until 1921 he served under most difficult conditions as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. He was created earl of Ypres in 1921.
