Studied at Exeter College Oxford.
Entered army, 1860, as a cornet 6th Dragoon Guards (The Carabiniers), and passing through every grade, commanded that regiment as Lieutenant-Colonel from 1877 to 1882. As a Colonel commanded 17th Leicester regimental District, 1883-1888. As a Major-General commanded the South Irish (Cork) District 1893-1898.
War service, command of the Carabiniers throughout campaign, Afghanistan, 1879-1880.
Command of 2nd movable column, Khaibar Field Force, eto., et cetera, 1879-1880. Afghan medal; Victoria Jubilee medal.
In receipt of Reward for Distinguished Service. Recreodioois: polo (winner of silver cup).
Rowing (winner of cups).
Won presentation sword as best swordsman of officers of The Carabiniers, 1872. Steeple-chasing (won his regimental cup twice). Is on the Councils of the Hunters Improvement Society, Army and Navy Pensioners Employment Society, et cetera
