John Gallahue was born on August 27, 1930, in New York, United States. He was a son of Thomas and Mary Gallahue.
John Gallahue studied at Boston College where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1954. Then he attended Boston College School of Theology and Ministry and received a Licentiate in Philosophy degree. He also had an additional graduate study at Columbia University.
John Gallahue was a Jesuit in the New England diocese. During his time he wrote for Catholic journals and afterward for Look magazine. In 1960 he left the seminary and in 1969 started his career as a teacher of History of Civilization at Columbia University in 1969. Gallahue also taught at the New School and Fordham University. However, in 1973 he began a private therapy practice. At that time his best-selling novel "The Jesuit," was published, which was translated and distributed worldwide.
John Gallahue was a member of the American Academy of Religion and Academy of Religion and Mental Health.
John Gallahue married Martha Jean Bohn on May 10, 1969. They had three children. Later he divorced Martha and married Susan.
