John Gallen was born on November 29, 1932, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States.
John Gallen studied at Fordham University where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1957 and a Master of Arts degree in 1958. He also studied at the University of Trier and received a Doctor of Sacred Theology degree in 1967.
John Gallen started his career as an associate professor of pastoral theology at Woodstock College in 1967. He held this post until 1974. Gallen also worked as an associate professor of liturgy at the University of Notre Dame. Besides, he was a director of the Center for Pastoral Liturgy. In 1960 he founded North American Academy for Liturgy and in 1975 took a post of director of this Academy. However, he left this post in 1976.
John Gallen published his first book, Scripture Services: Eighteen Bible Themes Edited for Group Use, in 1963. He also was an editor of such books as Eucharistic Liturgies: Studies in American Pastoral Liturgy and Christians at Prayer.
