John Gilstrap was born in 1957.
John Gilstrap wrote his first short stories as a young boy. Fascinated by the writings of Bob Woodward and Jake Bernstein, he had a dream to become a journalist. Gilstrap partly realized his goal in a high school where he edited the local newspaper.
After, the young man entered College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia where he earned a degree in American history in 1979.
The next decade, Gilstrap completed his graduate studies at the University of Southern California. There, he obtained a Master of Science degree in safety engineering.
John Gilstrap started his professional career in Virginia from a post of a managing editor at a small trade journal on construction industry that he occupied after graduating from the College of William and Mary in 1979. He didn’t love much the job, and to flee from his routine, he joined Burke Volunteer Fire Department in Fairfax County as a volunteer. In time, the simple hobby turned into an important part of the writer’s life lasting fifteen years.
The following decade, he left the post of an editor and was appointed as an expert in explosives safety and hazardous waste. He didn’t drop his youthful passion and kept on writing secretly.
His first published work, ‘Nathan's Run’, saw the print in 1996. It was actually his fourth novel telling the story of an orphaned twelve-year-old on the run after he killed a guard in a juvenile detention facility. Quickly, the book became a best seller, and Warner Brothers purchased the movie rights to it. During this time, Gilstrap presided an environmental compliance consulting company. He remained at the post even after such a great success.
The recognition of his second novel issued in 1998, ‘At All Cost’, finally persuaded its author to dedicate all his time to writing. Gilstrap has produced several other novels and a number of screenplays.
After some time, the writer dropped writing again and came back firstly to his consulting business. In 2004, he became the director of safety in a trade association in Washington, D. C. In a couple of years, Gilstrap’s first and last non-fictional story, ‘Six Minutes to Freedom’ was published. It was followed by ‘No Mercy’ in 2009, the first in a thriller series about Jonathan Grave. The last, tenth story about the adventures of the character, ‘Scorpion Strike’, appeared in 2018.
In addition to his own novels, the writer has contributed to such anthologies of thriller stories as ‘The Chopin Manuscript’ (2007), ‘The Copper Bracelet’ (2009), and ‘Fresh Kills’ (2010). He has adapted several works of Nelson DeMille, Norman McLean and Thomas Harris into four screenplays for Hollywood.
Nowadays, John Gilstrap lives in Fairfax, Virginia. He speaks actively on suspense writing techniques at various literary meetings, libraries, and universities, such as the Smithsonian Institution.
