(Nancy was to be the flower girl in her sister's wedding -...)
Nancy was to be the flower girl in her sister's wedding -- a large church affair, with an elegant reception in the garden afterward. Nancy could hardly contain her excitement -- there were so many things with which to experiment. From riding up the aisle on her sister's long rain instead of holding it up to hiding in her sister's going-away trunk, she tried them all! This tale of a funny, irrepressible, venturesome mouse who innocently causes one crisis after another -- by the artist who created Creepy Castle and Shrewbettinas Birthday -- will delight all beholders as it unfolds in lovely full color, without words and with half-pages that carry along a narrative full of delightful surprises.

Mr. Goodall was born in Heacham, Norfolk, United Kingdom, on June 7, 1908. He was the son of Prof Joseph Strickland Goodall an eminent cardiologist, and his wife, Amelia Hunt. He came from a long line of doctors.
John Goodall attended Harrow School. His father permitted him to leave academia and instead train as an artist under two family friends: Sir Arthur Stockdale Cope and John Watson Nicol. From 1925 to 1929 he attended the Royal Academy of Arts.
In the 1930s, Mr. Goodall worked mainly as an illustrator, for such magazines as the Radio Times and the Bystander. He also painted landscapes, interiors and conversation pieces, mostly in watercolour, which he preferred to painting in oil.
In 1936, Mr. Goodall illustrated Anthony Robertson’s Row to Do and Say in England. During his literary career, Mr. Goodall contributed to newspapers and magazines. Among his credits for illustration are Lewis Gar roll’s Alice in Wonderland, Barbara Ker Wilson’s airy Tales of England, and several stories by Edith Blands, including Phoenix and the Carpet. He also wrote numerous children’s books himself for which be also provided illustrations.
During the Second World War he worked as a camouflage artist, based in India. He had his first public exhibition of paintings in the Government School of Art in Calcutta in 1943. After the war John Goodall settled in Tisbury where he shared an idyllic cottage with his wife. The house featured in many of his paintings.
He died in Shaftesbury on 2 June 1996.

As a man, his three outstanding characteristics were his gentleness, his humour, and his modesty.
He married Margaret Nicol in 1933. Mrs. Nicol fell ill in 1970, and was thereafter mostly confined to bed. John Goodall nursed her devotedly, leaving the house only once a week. This enforced seclusion led him to concentrate on children's books and it was this, paradoxically, that was to lead to his greatest success. In 1989 his wife died.
He with his wife had one daughter.
