John Goodyear is an Australian lawyer who practised in Sydney as a partner of the law firm Phillips Fox. He studied law at the University of Sydney, earning a Bachelor of Laws, and was admitted to the bar in Australia in 1970.
Education
Goodyear studied law at the University of Sydney, where he completed the Bachelor of Laws degree. The Law School was inaugurated in 1855 as one of the first three disciplines of the university, alongside Arts and Medicine. Its work in the early decades consisted largely of examining rather than teaching, and a full programme of legal instruction began in 1890 after the appointment of its first dean.
In 1970 Goodyear was admitted to the bar in Australia, the year recorded for his entry into legal practice. His professional career developed in Sydney, where his legal training in Australia was followed by work in a major commercial law firm.
Career
Goodyear was admitted to the bar in Australia in 1970 and subsequently practised as a partner of Phillips Fox in Sydney. The firm traced its origins to 1864, when it was founded as P.D. Phillips, and it grew into one of the larger law practices in Australasia.
Phillips Fox later became part of a wider legal network. It merged with the international firm DLA Piper, and the Phillips Fox name was dropped when DLA Piper opened for business in Australia in 2011. Goodyear's partnership therefore belongs to the firm's Australian period before this merger.
