Gordon, John was born on February 5, 1878 in Gray County, Canada. Son of Robert and Margaret (Davidson) Gordon.

Brought to the United States, 1889. Preparatory education, high school and normal school, Angola, Indiana. Student Butler College, Indianapolis, 1899.

Bachelor of Divinity, Chicago Theological Seminary, 1905, Doctor of Divinity, 1919.

Doctor of Divinity, Rockford College, 1937.

Career

Ministry, 1903; pastor Grand Rapids, Michigan, 1903-1907, Ravenswood, Chicago, 1907-1912, 2d Church, Rockford, Illinois, since 1912 (over 1500 members). Elected pastor for life, 2d Church, Rockford, 1933. With Young Men's Christian Association, on transport between United States and France, World War.

Sent to England by Carnegie Commission in interest of International friendship, 1919.

Chaplain on trip around the world, 1923, and 2 trips to North Cape in same capacity. Second cruise around world, investigating missionary work of Congressional Church, 1931.

Lecturer on pastoral theology, Chicago Theological Seminary, 1926. Spent summer of 1934 in Russia and Germany, studying conditions and later giving lectures on that subject.

Spent spring of 1938 in Palestine, studying situation of the Jew and Arab.
