Not illustrated. 1893 Excerpt: ...when the planet's motion is changing from direct to retrograde and vice Lucida. A term sometimes applied to the brightest object in a group of stars. Thus Alcyone may be called the lucida of the Pleiades. Luculi. A term sometimes applied to the small bright spots visible on the sun's surface. Lumiere Cendree. A term applied to the "earthshine" visible on the moon when in the crescent phase. Lunar Cycle. Same as Meteoric Cycle, which see. Lunar Distances. The angular distance of the moon's centre from the sun or from bright stars and planets which lie near its path in the sky. Tables of these computed distances are given in the Nautical Almanack for every third hour of Greenwich mean time. Lunar Inequalities. Inequalities or deviations from a regular elliptic orbit produced in the moon's motion round the earth by the attraction of the sun and planets. Lunation. Same as a Synodic Month, which see. Lune. The crescent-shaped space contained between two intersecting circles. Lupus (the Wolf). One of the southern constellations. Lynx (the Lynx). One of the northern constellations. Lyra (the Lyre). One of the northern constellations. Its brightest star is the brilliant Vega (a Lyrse). Lyrids. A shower of meteors visible about April 19th to 30th in each year. They seem to radiate from a point near the constellation Lyra (271 + 33). M. Maculse. A term sometimes applied to the darker portions of sun spots. Magellanic Clouds. Two spots of nebulous light visible to the naked eye in the southern hemisphere, and distinct from the Milky Way. The larger is known to astronomers as the Nubecula Major, and the smaller as the Nubemda Minor. Both consist of a collection of small stars, star clusters, and nebulse. Magnetic Storm. (Some observations recently made by Prof. W. H. Pickering ...)
Some observations recently made by Prof. W. H. Pickering in Jamaica, make the value of sunlight 540,000 times that of moonlight. This makes the sun’s “stellar magnitude” minus 26·83, and that of moonlight minus 12·5. Prof. Pickering finds that the light of the full moon is equal to 100,000 stars of zero magnitude. He finds that the moon’s “albedo” is about 0·0909; or in other words, the moon reflects about one-tenth of the light which falls on it from the sun. He also finds that the light of the full moon is about twelve times the light of the half moon: a curious and rather unexpected result.

(Originally published in 1893. PREFACE: The object of the ...)
Originally published in 1893. PREFACE: The object of the following pages is not to propound any new hypothesis, but simply to explain and discuss theories which have been supported by well known astronomers and other men of science. Hypotheses which are merely paradoxes will of course not be considered. The latest results respecting the distribution of stars and nebulae, their relative motions, and the physical constitution of the heavenly bodies, will be given; and it is hoped that the work will prove of interest to the general reader as well as to the student of astronomy. Illustrated throughout, this works is thoroughly recommended for inclusion on the bookshelf of any one interested in the universe. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900's and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.

(This book was originally published prior to 1923, and rep...)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.
