He was the only surviving son of Henry III and his wife Beatrix of Lower Bavaria, the daughter of Duke Stephen I. He succeeded his father as Count of Gorizia in 1323.

Since he died young, he never actually reigned himself. The marriage remained childless. They were Meinhard VI (until 1374), Albert III (until 1365) and Henry V (until 1362).
His grave can be found in the parish church in Rosazzo in Udine.
