John Greig is an Australian lawyer who practised in Brisbane, Queensland, as a partner of the law firm Feez Ruthning. He studied at the University of Queensland, earning Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Laws (Honours) degrees, and was admitted to the bar in Queensland in 1986. His career centred on a long-established Brisbane firm with origins in the nineteenth century.
Education
John Greig completed his university studies at the University of Queensland, where his degrees were a Bachelor of Commerce and a Bachelor of Laws with Honours. The university was established by an act of the Queensland Parliament on 10 December 1909, to mark the fiftieth anniversary of Queensland's separation from New South Wales. It was the first university in the state, and its first students enrolled in 1911, when classes were held at Old Government House on George Street in Brisbane.
Career
Greig's documented professional career centred on Feez Ruthning, an established Brisbane law firm. Its origins lay in the practice that Robert Little opened in Brisbane in 1846. In 1911 the firm was formed through a merger with the practice founded by Peter Macpherson in 1865, and it later changed its name to Feez Ruthning & Co in 1927 and to Feez Ruthning in 1986.
Greig was admitted to the bar in Queensland in 1986, the year the firm adopted the name Feez Ruthning. He worked there as a partner until the firm's Queensland practice became part of the national practice of Allens Arthur Robinson in 1996.
The firm's Brisbane practice therefore belonged to the lineage of the modern firm Allens. Allens traces its history to Feez Ruthning & Co in Brisbane, and in 2012 it formed an integrated alliance with the London firm Linklaters.
