philosopher physiologist researcher
John Scott Haldane was born on May 2, 1860 in Edinburgh.
Educated at Edinburgh Academy, and at Edinburgh and Jena universities, he received his medical degree from Edinburgh in 1884.
From 1887 to 1913, Haldane was on the staff of the department of physiology at Oxford University.
In 1905 he was elected a Fellow of New College at Oxford.
In an outstanding paper presented in the same year, Haldane became the first to prove the importance of the carbon dioxide concentration in the blood for the regulation of breathing.
This concentration ensures the automatic adjustment of the ventilation of the lungs to meet the changes in carbon dioxide production of the whole body.
He extended this investigation to cover the influence of oxygen deficiency on breathing and, in an expedition to the summit of Pikes Peak, Columbia. He studied acclimatization of the body to high altitudes.
In 1907 Haldane made a decompression chamber to help make deep-sea divers safer and produced the first decompression tables after extensive experiments with animals.
This study had obvious bearing on heat stroke, one of the troubles encountered in deep mines.
To enable deep-sea divers to rise safely to the surface, Haldane devised a method of stage-decompression.
In addition to his papers, Haldane also wrote several books on the relation of philosophy to the biological and physical sciences: Methods of Air Analysis (1912, rev. ed. with Ivon Graham 1934); Mechanism, Life and Personality (1913, rev. ed. 1921); Organism and Environment as Illustrated by the Physiology of Breathing (1917); The New Physiology (1919); Respiration (1922, rev. ed. with J. G. Priestley 1935); The Sciences and Philosophy (1928); The Philosophical Basis of Biology (1931); Materialism (1932); Philosophy of a Biologist (1935).
He continued in scientific research until his death.
