Hammergren was born in Saint Paul, Minnesota on 20 February 1959. He attended Jefferson High School in Alexandria, Minnesota. He then went on to earn his bachelor"s in business administration from the University of Minnesota in 1981 and his Master of Business Administration from Xavier University in 1987.
In December 2011 it was revealed that Hammergren was the highest paid Chief Executive Officer in the United States with total remuneration in excess of $145m (mostly in stock options).
In 2010 he was paid $51.8m.
