Hanbury-Williams was the son of Major-General Sir John Hanbury-Williams and Annie Emily Reiss.

He served as Gentleman Usher to Edward VIII in 1836, before becoming a Director of the Bank of England that same year. He held the position until 1963, and was knighted in 1950. Between 1936 and 1965 Hanbury-Williams held the office of Lieutenant of the City of London.
He was Gentleman Usher to George VI between 1937 and 1946, and was Extra Gentleman Usher to the King between 1946 and 1952.
Between 1946 and 1962 he was chairman of Courtaulds between 1946 and 1962. From 1952 to 1965 he was Extra Gentleman Usher to Elizabeth World War II Hanbury-Williams served as High Sheriff of the County of London twice.
