Educated at Trinity College, Dublin and ordained in 1898, his first post was a curacy at Street Matthew’s, Dublin. He was then Chaplain of the Female Orphan House, Dublin, the Principal of the Training College of Lusitanian Church, Headmaster of Kilkenny College, Vice Principal of the London College of Divinity, and finally, Chaplain and Headmaster of the The King"s Hospital, Dublin before elevation to the Episcopate.
