Mr. Haycraft was born in Quetta, Balochistan, Pakistan, on December 11, 1926. He was the son of a British officer in the colonial Indian army. Born in India with his brother Colin, their father died when they were still young, killed by one of his soldiers. So his early life was spent travelling in Europe with his mother and his brother. Olive, his mother, supported her family on a small army pension and worked as a tennis player.
John Haycraft and his brother Colin came back to Britain, where they both studied at Oxford University – John matriculated from Jesus College in 1948 and obtained a second-class degree in modern history in 1951.
In the 1950s, he founded his first language school in Cordoba, Spain. In 1953 International House World Organisation was started by John and his wife Brita Haycraft. A fervent internationalist, John Haycraft strove to promote international understanding through language learning and teacher training. In 1974 they set up a non-profit-making educational trust committed to raising the standards of English language teaching and training worldwide. International House Trust trades today as International House London.
In 1959, he moved his operation to London, England. It was at that time his first book was published, Babel in Spain, recounting his years in Spain. He contributed articles to trade journals and assisted the British Broadcasting Company (BBC) with the series English by Radio.
When he died on 23 May 1996, he left behind a network of 100 schools that grew from the first school in Córdoba in Spain to cover 40 countries.
John Haycraft is remembered as the founder of International House, a language school with more than 100 affiliates around the globe. In a period of almost 35 years, more than 30,000 people have taken this course and have experienced it as one of the most powerful educational experiences of their life. It has been the primary influence on most of the key figures in ELT today; one could even say that Mr. Haycraft invented the modern profession of ELT teacher trainer.
He was appointed a Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II in 1982.

Mr. Haycraft married in 1953 Brita Langenfelt. They had two sons, one daughter.
